What Is a DUPR Rating in Pickleball?
Fair competition is a virtue worth pursuing. Nothing feels worse as a competitor than being matched against an opponent far above your skill level and getting crushed in the first round of a tournament. For top-ranked players, the prestige only matters if you can prove your mettle against other highly skilled opponents. That's why the Dynamic Universal Pickleball Ranking, or DUPR, exists: to give players accurate skill ratings, ensuring fair and fun competition for everyone involved.
What is DUPR?
DUPR is a player skill rating system that gauges the abilities of a pickleball player, very similar to tennis player rating systems such as the NTRP or UTR. The ratings go from a scale of 2.000-8.000 points. At the lowest end, 2.000 is considered the "Novice" level, while everything from 5.000 and beyond is considered "Professional" level. For reference, top pickleballer Ben Johns achieved a peak DUPR rating with a score of 7.414.
| DUPR Rating Range | Skill Level |
|---|---|
| 2.000-2.999 | Novice |
| 3.000-3.999 | Intermediate |
| 4.000-4.999 | Advanced |
| 5.000-8.000 | Professional |

Explaining the Reliability Score
Reliability is a secondary rating that complements your DUPR score. It's a measure of how accurately the system is assessing your skill level. Like with good statistics, you need a significantly large sample of results to get an accurate DUPR rating. Beating a 5.000 player once doesn't automatically make you better than them, nor will beating a handful of other players repeatedly prove your abilities. In order to have a high Reliability score, the DUPR requires several criteria to be met:
Frequency
The more you play, the more data the system can use. Beating a skilled player once may just be a fluke, but beating many skilled players consistently shows that your skills are the real deal. A bigger sample size means there are fewer odds that some random off-days reflect poorly on your skill rating.
Variety
Playing within your friends and community is all well and good, but competitors willing to go the distance and travel for competition will have better Reliability. By putting your skills to the test against a wider variety of players, it shows that they hold up regardless of who you're playing against.
Recency
Your most recent results are given the most weight. Months of inactivity can cause Reliability to drop, so playing consistently will maintain high Reliability. The last 6 months of play are also given the most weight for determining your DUPR rating.
Once the system has collected enough data, you may start seeing a Reliability score of at least 60% appear next to your rating. 60% is considered reliable, showing that you've played enough matches for the system to give you an accurate skill rating.
Reasons to Use DUPR
The main reason to use DUPR is to ensure that you can compete with other players who are within your skill range. Playing with others at your skill level is not only the most fun way to compete, but it also gives you the best environment to refine your skills. DUPR also makes events easier to find and organize, helping players find communities within their skill levels as well as make it easier for tournament organizers to match up players fairly. Doubles events found on sites like pickleballtournaments.com include events that limit teams based on their combined DUPR rankings, for example.
Do I Need DUPR to Play Pickleball?
No, you do not need to be in the DUPR system to play pickleball. Nothing is stopping you from gathering with friends to play matches, or even competing with others. What DUPR can do for you, however, is make it easier to find competition at your skill level. Pairing up with a doubles partner has never been easier, since you can narrow down the hunt to other players with similar skills. Whether or not you opt into the system, remember the most important part of playing pickleball is to have fun.
